The future is here, and Daimler is leading the way towards a more connected and environment-conscious society. Jeremy Rifkin, author and futurologist, said at the Daimler Campus Connectivity event that the German company is putting in place information hubs across the country to help in collecting data.

Rifkin added there are three components to the Internet of Things—the Communication Internet, the Energy Internet, and the Logistics Internet. We are already using both the Communication and Energy Internet, but the Logistics Internet is something that Daimler is spearheading.

What Daimler is doing is to put up mobile connectivity hubs through its trucks that move across the country. This enables Daimler and other businesses to tap into the data collated by these moving hubs.

The hubs would allow the dissemination of traffic information, weather updates, and even fuel efficiency data. Rifkin explained that the information collected can be used to start up information drive, businesses, programs, and campaigns to end environment degradation.

By tapping into this pool of information, a lot can be done. Such data can herald a new age of campaigns and research studies that will address environmental issues, particularly climate change. Data about fuel efficiency, for one, can help auto manufacturers to produce more energy saving vehicles.

Having Daimler’s mobile information hubs across the country will make it even easier for businesses to create programs because the data is readily available. And because it is sourced from actual road situation, such information would reflect what is needed in a particular road.
