Mercedes Enhances Its Front Wing Design For F1 Car
Giancarlo Perlas October 10, 2015The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team indisputably has the best engine right now in the sport. This allows its F1 car to plow through competition with ease, and is putting it once more to another path going to the Constructors and Drivers Championship.
One characteristic that has been instrumental in the supremacy of the team is its unwavering effort to improve itself from time to time. Just like the brand it represents, it wants to ensure that it is always ahead of the competition.
Recently, the racing group introduced a new concept for improving its car’s aerodynamics in the form of serrated components at the front wing flap. According to Motorsport website, the sharp, teeth-like parts aim to improve the balance of the car.
Balance is achieved by enabling a number of small vortices on the part where the saw-like components are installed. The vortices will then prevent airflow separation at the front wing portion of the car to keep its stability on the track at high speeds, especially when the wing is positioned at a slightly higher angle.
The new design was initially used by McLaren last year. But it was installed in the middle part of the rear wing. Mercedes was the first to try the idea on the front wing.
The teeth-like elements were first spotted during the recent F1 event in Japan. It looks like it will be used again in Russia.
Current F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton gave his stamp of approval on the efforts of their mechanics going to the Russian Grand Prix. The Briton said he is confident they will surpass their performance last year.
