Red Bull Wants Mercedes Engines So Bad
Giancarlo Perlas July 31, 2015Early this July, a shocker broke out that Red Bull was interested to land an engine deal with Mercedes-Benz. Almost immediately after the news came out, Niki Lauda dismissed the issue. Recently, a report from Grandprix.com suggested that the energy drink-owned Formula One team may be going in that direction after all.
It is no secret that the relationship of Red Bull and Renault had soured since last season as the engine supplier failed to deliver a competitive power unit for the team. With the continuous harsh criticisms of the group with its engine partner ever since, it seems the two will most likely part ways next season.
Sensing the opportunity, Ferrari just offered to sell Red Bull its engines for next year. There’s a little setback with the proposed deal of Ferrari though. According to the source, it is believed that the engine supplied would be one specification behind the Maranello-based team’s race cars.
Of course, the competitive nature of Red Bull coupled with its drive to retain its former glory does not agree with that idea. So the Austrian F1 team has been making inquiries with Mercedes.
Unlike Ferrari, Mercedes strongly claims that the engines it supplies the other F1 teams have specs mirroring the ones found in the power units of its race cars. Therefore, it is indeed a wiser choice for Red Bull.
The eagerness of Red Bull to get a Mercedes engine for its F1 cars in the 2016 season was confirmed by an unnamed insider of Motorsport within the company. The source said Red Bull has been calling its rival’s headquarters weekly regarding the matter.
