Mercedes-Benz is the Official Partner of Mille Miglia
Giancarlo Perlas May 18, 2014The Mille Miglia, which means “Thousand Miles” in Italian, was prestigious open-road endurance race. It was held in Italy from 1927 to 1957. The race was stopped in 1957 after two fatal crashes that claimed the lives of drivers, co-driver and spectators. Then, it was resumed in 1958 to 1961, and in 1977 to commemorate its golden year.
Another Mille Miglia event is being conducted again this year, which already started in May 15, and it will continue up to May 18. Mercedes-Benz is the official partner of the prestigious event.
The Mille Miglia race took off at Brescia going to Padova. Next, the participants will travel down the eastern coast of Italy to Roma. After that, the race will proceed in Bologna and to Brescia. The enduring race covers 1,708 km. This will surely be a test of will and determination as the cars built around 1927 to 1957 will surely post a huge challenge to the drivers.
Notable celebrities who were participants in the event this year are Jay Leno and Jeremy Irons. Each celebrity brought their own classic Jaguars in the event.
Stirling Moss’ Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Auctioned
During its run on May 1, 1955, Stirling Moss and co-driver Denis Jenkinson emerged victorious in the event using a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. Recently, it was announced that Bonhams will be selling the same car in an auction held at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
Aside from the Mercedes 300 SLR, which was used to bag the 1955 trophy of the Mille Miglia in 1955, the auction will also include 40 other iconic vehicles of the brand’s colorful history.
