What the 2014 F1 Engine from Mercedes-Benz Sounds Like [Video]
Ryan Joseph Ramos August 2, 2013The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team’s official YouTube channel just upped a vid that features the sounds of the new 2014 F1 V6 engine by Mercedes-Benz. The video takes a simulated F1 car across a full lap on the Monza circuit
It’s the first real insight we have on the new engine apart from the fact that it’s a 1.6L turbocharged unit with max rev limit of 15,000 rpm and up to 125,000 rpm for a single turbocharger.
You’ll notice that there’s a noticeable difference between how the current engines sound, although we might want to wait for a real field test. Note that this video’s audio was run through a development unit. Still, this is as close as we can get when it comes to next year’s F1 engines.
The test, conducted in the Brixworth-based Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) facility, was made possible by syncing the simulated lap of the circuit to a lap of same circuit using the team simulator in Brackley. This made getting the audio from the dev engine possible.
