Video: The AMG Safety Car Story

Ah, the safety car. It is one of the fixtures of Formula One races, not only because it has been a hot Mercedes-Benz AMG model for the past several years, but also because of the role it plays in each and every F1 weekend. It’s true that most of us only see the safety car for brief stints during the warmup lap and in some unfortunate stretches of the race.

It’s a good thing, then, that the official AMG channel on YouTube has presented us with a video that gives us an inside track on the safety car.

In the video, we see Bernd Maylander, longtime F1 safety car driver, talk about the car’s history, its progression from one AMG model to the next, and some personal stuff. We’re first led into a horse barn, an obvious reference to the horsepower involved in F1 races as well as the high-performance safety car. Then we meet the driver, and he runs us through the different models he’s handled through the years.
