A Review: The Race Between Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe and Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang for Bragging Rights

Giancarlo Perlas December 21, 2012

As Peter Parcon reported, Evo conducted a drag race to see how the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang fares against the Mercedes-Benz C63. Well, we all know that these two cars are entirely different from each other. Each has features that are unique from the other. However, there is one thing that both models brag about – that they are good at straight line acceleration.

So, to put a rest to this debate, Evo pitted them against each other in a 0 to 1,000m drag race just to determine which one has the right to lay claim of the bragging rights.

The Result (Spoiler Alert!)

Here’s how the race turned out based on the video that was posted earlier:

It only took the Ford Shelby 4.01 seconds to reach the 0 to 60 mph mark while the Coupe only had 4.37 seconds. Then, the GT500 reached the 100 mph mark in 8.44 seconds while the C63 AMG had the timer at 9.90 seconds. The Mustang reached the 1,000-meter line as the needle of the speedometer pointed at 155.82 mph in just 21.65 seconds. The Benz was floored by over 1 second, as it took 22.8 seconds, with only a 148.62 mph as it reached the finish line.

Review

As a Mercedes-Benz fan, I say that the result is very disappointing. The GT500 totally blew dust right into the windshield of the C63 AMG.

The C63, I think, was at an unfair advantage as Evo used the classic and unmodified version of the C63 AMG Coupe with only a 6.2-liter tank, V8 engine that scores a 451 hp and 600 Nm. On the other hand, the GT500 was equipped with a 5.8 supercharged V8 engine packed with 662 hp and 856 Nm.

The specs alone makes the race very predictable and it does not take a genius to take a winning pick between the two. The publication should have at least chosen a Mercedes that had a performance boost or the Black Edition that boasts around 510 hp. I am not saying that this is enough for the C63 to win but given a higher specs, it would have at least put up a good fight. Or better, get the new SL 65 AMG with about the same specs with Mustang and the story would have been different.
