Powerful twelve-cylinder engine
Muamer Hodzic September 12, 2007The Maybach saloons are powered by a specially developed twelve-cylinder engine which delivers 405 kW/550 hp in the 57 and 62 or 450 kW/612 hp in the 57 S and 62 S. This powerplant rates as one of the pinnacles of engine technology and underscores the luxury brand’s claim to its high-end position within the automotive market.
The uprated V12 engine which the Maybach engineers have enhanced in cooperation with the experts from Mercedes-AMG gives the Maybach 57 S and 62 S high-performance luxury saloons superlative driving dynamics. Thanks to biturbo technology and an air/water intercooler, the 5980 cc V12 engine develops a maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp which it is able to maintain from 4800 to 5100 rpm, while the impressive maximum torque of 1000 newton metres is available from 2000 to 4000 rpm.
Innovative engine technology
The latest technology and numerous intelligent details developed by Mercedes-AMG specialists are the basis for the cars’ outstanding performance. As an example, the forged pistons are made from a special material which withstands extreme temperatures and pressures, and are kept at the optimal temperature by a sophisticated oil-jet cooling system with a separate nozzle for each of the twelve pistons. A particularly efficient oil pump and a large oil cooler ensure that all lubrication points are reliably supplied with oil, even under the highest loads. The compressor and turbine housings of the two turbochargers, as well as the impellers, are designed for a high charge pressure of up to 1.5 bar.
The high-performance engine is also equipped with highly efficient charge-air cooling, which lowers the temperature of the intake air compressed by the turbochargers before it enters the combustion chambers, using the particularly effective principle of the air-to-water heat exchanger. The large surface area of the low-temperature intercooler guarantees effective cooling at all times, even under full throttle, and therefore provides the driver with a high output and torque yield in all ambient temperatures and under all operating conditions.
Mercedes-AMG ‘Manufaktur’
In line with the Maybach approach, the twelve-cylinder biturbo engine is hand-assembled in the Mercedes-AMG engine workshops, or ‘Manufaktur’. The “One man, one engine” philosophy is reflected by the signature of the technician responsible on the characteristic model plate, which is attached to the engine cover of the V12 biturbo in the Maybach 57 S and 62 S – a guarantee of the greatest care and highest quality.
Innovative technology from the sister brand, Mercedes-Benz
All Maybach saloons are designed with meticulous attention to detail and built in a state-of-the-art “Manufaktur”. Moreover, these contemporary luxury saloons feature the most advanced automotive technology which makes travelling in a Maybach as pleasant and as safe as possible. As a result, they have set new standards for outstanding equipment and superb craftsmanship at the very top of the passenger car market. At the same time, these luxury vehicles reflect the expertise of DaimlerChrysler as the world’s oldest and most innovative car maker and reap the benefits of the vast experience of Maybach’s sister brand Mercedes-Benz in the development and production of high-quality models in the luxury car segment.
As a consequence, key Mercedes-Benz innovations have been further developed for the Maybach saloons and are fitted as standard. These include the AIRMATIC DC (Dual Control) electronically controlled air suspension, LINGUATRONIC voice-controlled operation and the COMAND APS control and display system.
