Remember the 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Lorinser Coupe once owned by Michael Jordan? Well, it turns out that it’s still on the market three years after it was last put on sale, despite being a rare, custom-built vehicle owned by one of the world’s most famous athletes.
The History of the Car
Jordan and his former-wife Juanita bought the Mercedes S600 Coupe in 1995, and the NBA star owned it until 2003. The car was already special by then as it came with a 6.0-liter M120 V12 engine with a 389 hp powertrain and five-speed automatic transmission. However, they decided to customize the car’s exterior by adding Lorinser’s widebody kit, 20-inch monoblock wheels, and dual exhaust pipes.
The Last Dance Cameo
The car made a brief appearance in ESPN’s docuseries, The Last Dance. The series documented Jordan’s basketball career with a special focus on his 1997-1998 season with the Chicago Bulls. This appearance made the car even more famous and desirable among collectors and enthusiasts.
The 2020 Auction
After its appearance on The Last Dance, the car went up for auction on eBay in 2020. The starting bid was $23, a nod to Jordan’s jersey number with the Bulls.
The offer quickly rose to $202,200 but the purchase failed because the winner apparently failed to raise enough money following his successful bid. Following that, the Mercedes S600 Lorinser Coupe failed to be resold during the next auction at the Bring a Trailer website.
The Current Status
The car is still on the market up to this day and it can now be found at the Beverly Hills Car Club with an asking price of $135,000. Despite the car’s unique history and features, it seems that its connection to Jordan alone is not enough to score a successful sale in the past three years.
