This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is still looking good despite coming out of the assembly plant in the Nixon administration. It’s one of the timeless masterpieces of Mercedes over the years, and it is like a wine that gains more value as it ages.
Recently, the red 280 SL was offered on eBay. But after only two bids, with the maximum offer going up to $50,100, it failed to sell. According to the online seller, the reserved price for the car wasn’t met.
Based on the description of the merchandise, the car hasn’t changed ownership for 30 years. It was not indicated what happened to the car prior to the said period though.
Nevertheless, the current owner made sure that the car retained its pristine appeal. The owner noted that the car has mostly been garaged, with exception of Sunday short drives. Then, its soft top has never been up.
The speedometer of the auto only reads 31,741 by the time of its posting. The owner also claimed that it has never been from a wreck, and he had its black interior and red exterior refurbished only eight years ago.
The mechanical fuel injection, air suspensions, and vacuum-operated accessories of the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL may no longer be at par with the standards of today’s automotive buyers, but the mentioned features were considered to be cutting-edge during the car’s time.
As a quick recap, the 1971 Mercedes 280 SL has a gasoline-powered inline-six engine enabling it to produce up to 162 bhp and 174 lb-ft of torque. Some models with similar condition to the one here costs at least $79,900 in Hemmings.
