<p>The strikingly broad mudguards, the retractable rear spoiler and the rear apron with diffuser fins point unmistakably to its motorsport origins, part of the Mercedes-AMG corporate philosophy for more than 40 years. One might even see a bit of the SLR in this behemoth, but that is to no surprise, since the the next supercar will be built by AMG, so design sharing will be noticeable. A glance at the new SL 65 AMG Black Series and you are reminded of the successful AMG racing sports cars like the present DTM C-Class or the 1997 CLK-GTR from the FIA-GT series. View the gallery below and you will see that the Black Series has a wider cooling air apertures in the front and the rear, which just shows you how massive the power of the AMG 12 cylinder, biturbocharged engine really is.</p>

<p>Wide cooling air apertures in the front apron and the bonnet are the clearest indication of the massive power of this AMG twelve-cylinder, biturbocharged engine. From its 5980 cubic capacity, the AMG V12&#8217;s engine generates a maximum power of 493 kW/670 hp at 5400 rpm and an electronically limited torque of 1000 Newtonmetres between 2200 and 4200 rpm. Without a limiter, the AMG 6.0 litre V12 biturbo engine, which is hand-built in the AMG engine factory in accordance with the &#8220;one man – one engine&#8221; philosophy, would achieve a maximum torque of 1200 Newtonmetres. Compared with the basis power pack in the 450 kW/612 hp SL 65 AMG, new turbochargers were developed for the twelve-cylinder SL 65 AMG Black Series engine. The turbochargers&#8217; spiral cross-section, now twelve per cent larger, and the optimised wastegate ducts permit increased air throughput and an even more impressive display of power in all engine speed ranges. The modified intake air ducting results in an even more spontaneous response. The new design for the AMG sports exhaust gas system&#8217;s rear silencers reduce the exhaust gas backpressure and help increase the power output. The acoustic side effect of this is to produce a distinctive twelve-cylinder sound, typically evocative of AMG engine tuning, from the two trapezoidal tail pipes. The low-temperature charge air cooler, now 30 per cent more powerful, and the optimised water cooling system guarantee not only that the power generated under extreme dynamic driving conditions is exploited to the maximum but also the greatest possible fatigue strength at high outside temperatures.</p>
<p><strong>Unique performance thanks to attractive power-to-weight ratio</strong></p>
<p>The extraordinary engine specifications, which make the SL 65 AMG Black Series the most powerful AMG model yet, help to produce unique performance data: from a standing start, it takes just 3.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h; 200 km/h is attained after 11.0 seconds. The top speed is 320 km/h (electronically limited).</p>

<p>Equally responsible for its excellent dynamics is the attractive power-to-weight ratio of only 2.79 hp/kg, resulting from the comparably low unladen weight of 1870 kilograms, according to EU standard measurement. This makes the SL 65 AMG Black Series some 250 kilograms lighter than the SL 65 AMG - a respectable weight saving due specifically to the use of lightweight construction. Numerous bodywork components are made of high-strength and particularly light carbon fibre composites (CFRP), a well-proven motorsports technology. The 14 centimetre wider front mudguard, the front apron with the visible carbon front splitter, the bonnet and the boot lid are all made from CFRP. Large apertures in the bonnet ensure that excess heat is reliably ducted away from the engine. &#8220;V12 Biturbo“ lettering on the front mudguards gives an indication of the engine&#8217;s power.</p>
<p><strong>New CFRP roof with integral roll-over bar</strong></p>
<p>The whole CFRP roof shell has taken on a completely new design. Not only does it now have an integral roll-over bar but, by no longer having the typical SL vario roof installed, the roof line has a significantly flatter profile. This is also evident from a glance at the bigger rear window, now placed at a less sharp angle to the boot lid. The CFRP rear spoiler, concealed in the boot lid, automatically extends twelve centimetres at 120 km/h, effectively reducing the lift force on the rear axle at high speeds. Looked at from the rear, the conspicuous feature is the new rear apron with its visible carbon diffuser. Concealed within it is the active cooling system for the rear axle locking differential.</p>
<p>New, weight-optimised, twin-spoke design, AMG forged alloy wheels - 19 inch wheels at the front and 20 inch at the rear - impressively occupy the whole of each wheel housing. With their black paintwork, high-sheen surface and matt finish, they lend a note of extravagance to the side profile.</p>
<p><strong>Power transmission with double-declutch function and four transmission modes</strong></p>
<p>Matching the outstanding performance potential and the versatile drive dynamics, the SL 65 AMG Black Series also displays its power pack and suspension at their best. An AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS five-speed automatic gearbox transmits power to the rear wheels. There is a choice between four transmission modes: &#8220;C&#8221;, &#8220;S&#8221;, &#8220;M1&#8243; and &#8220;M2&#8243; which has gearshift times 25 per cent quicker than the &#8220;M1&#8243; mode. The torque converter&#8217;s lockup clutch guarantees extremely direct gearshifting in all driving situations right from first gear. The automatic double-declutch function not only makes shifting down a more pleasurable task, it also ensures that the load alteration effect is reduced.</p>
<p><strong>AMG adjustable coil spring sports suspension and 3-stage ESPÒ</strong></p>
<p>As for the suspension, the AMG experts have put their trust in a new design. The AMG sports suspension has been designed on adjustable coil spring lines; this well-proven motorsports solution allows the shock absorbers&#8217; rebound and compression stages, the ride height, wheel alignment and camber to be adjusted. This means that the driver can adjust the suspension to suit his own personal specifications when driving on racing circuits. The spring links, camber struts and pull/push rods on both axles are new developments and each axle has a weight-optimised aluminium wheel carrier. Compared with the standard SL 65 AMG, the Black Series front axle track width is 97 millimetres wider and the rear axle track width 85 millimetres wider. The new front axle kinematics produce an 8 per cent more direct steering ratio; and the completely re-designed elastokinematics ensure noticeably greater steering precision. A multiple-disc limited-slip differential on the rear axle with a 40 per cent locking effect guarantees optimum traction.</p>
<p>The 3-stage sports function ESPÒ is a by-word for maximum driving pleasure and outstanding drive dynamics: The driver can choose between &#8220;ESP ON&#8221;, &#8220;ESP SPORT&#8221; and &#8220;ESP OFF&#8221; by pressing the ESPÒ button; the AMG instrument cluster will then show whichever mode is currently activated on the central display.</p>
<p><strong>Sports tyres and composite disc brakes for best performance</strong></p>
<p>The wheel-tyre combination chosen is also responsible for a superb performance by the SL 65 AMG Black Series on racing circuits. 265/35 R 19 tyres are fitted to 9.5 inch wide AMG light-alloy wheels on the front axle. The impressive format for the rear axle is AMG 11.5 x 20 light-alloy wheels with 325/30 R 20 tyres. Dunlop, DTM&#8217;s motorsports partner, supplies the &#8220;Sport Maxx GT&#8221; sport tyres which provide particularly good grip and permit astonishing cornering speeds.</p>
<p>The large AMG high-performance brake system can be seen through the filigree structure of the AMG twin-spoke light-alloy wheels. Internally ventilated and perforated disc brakes engineered in particularly strong composite materials are employed all round. On the front axle, braking is undertaken by six-piston fixed callipers and 390 x 36 mm discs; on the rear axles, this task is carried out by four-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 26 mm discs.</p>
<p><strong>A functional and lovingly designed interior </strong></p>
<p>Nappa leather, Alcantara and carbon: the interior of the SL 65 AMG Black Series provides the perfect ambience to set the pulses of sports car enthusiasts racing. The interior, entirely in black, exudes the functional atmosphere of a genuine racing sports car while the lovingly designed details have the power to captivate.</p>
<p>Newly developed AMG sports bucket seats made of CFRP (ECE version only) provide perfect lateral support for the occupants when taking bends fast. The seats without side airbags are upholstered in fine-grained nappa leather and Alcantara with embossed AMG lettering in the head restraints. With its 15 millimetre smaller diameter, flattened lower profile and with both sides perforated for easier grip, the AMG Performance steering wheel provides maximum vehicle control. The silver-coloured aluminium shift paddles allow manual gear selection.</p>
<p>Additional highlights in the centre console are the high-quality carbon trim parts, the gleaming matt start/stop button, the new selector lever with carbon inlay and the AMG logo with &#8220;Black Series&#8221; lettering. Matching features are the carbon door centre panels with embossed AMG lettering, together with the roof lining and the A and C-pillars upholstered in Alcantara anthracite.</p>
<p>The AMG instrument cluster is a completely new design. The black speedometer with its scale reading up to 360 km/h has also been re-designed; and the same is true of the white rev counter which has four integral LEDs to advise the driver of the optimum gearshift points.</p>
<p><strong>Exhaustive development in all the world&#8217;s climate zones</strong></p>
<p>Exhaustive development and testing of the SL 65 AMG Black Series began in 2006. AMG engineers and technicians test drove ten prototypes and experimental vehicles in all the world&#8217;s climate zones. Whether it was fast circuits of the Nürburgring, high-speed test driving in Nardo (Italy), wind tunnel testing, intensive test driving in summer heat or the cold of the Arctic or actual crash testing – the new AMG high-performance coupé had to prove its production readiness under all conditions. In total, the SL 65 AMG Black Series was test-driven for roughly 30,000 kilometres on various circuits, 15,000 kilometres of which were on the Nürburgring north loop alone, acknowledged to be the world&#8217;s most difficult race circuit.</p>
<p>Like the SLK 55 AMG Black Series and the CLK 63 AMG Black Series before it, the SL 65 AMG Black Series was also developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO, which opened in 2006. In May, the Mercedes-Benz brand delivered 98,100 new passenger cars, or five percent fewer than the 103,400 units recorded for the same month last year. Since the beginning of 2008, a total of 493,200 customers worldwide have opted to purchase a Mercedes-Benz model, an increase of five percent from the 468,400 buyers who chose a vehicle from the brand during the same period last year. This five-month sales figure also marks a new record for the Mercedes-Benz brand.</p>
<p>The C-Class remains extremely popular after only a little more than a year on the market. Sales of the model series’ sedan and station wagon variants rose 50 percent to 34,400 units last month (May 2007: 22,900), and a total of 350,000 new C-Class vehicles have been sold since the sedan’s premiere at dealerships at the end of March 2007, and the station wagon’s market launch in December of the same year.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL is thrilling sports car lovers with an even sportier design, as the latest version of the world’s most successful premium roadster attracted 1,900 buyers last month (May 2007: 1,300). With its new direct steering system, the two-seater is even more dynamic than ever, and also boasts enhanced safety and comfort.</p>

<p>The SL 63 AMG Edition IWC will be the first vehicle to be offered with the all-new designo magno Kashmir white finish. An interesting contrast to this color is formed by the components with a Carbon matte finish: the trailing edge , the diffusor insert in the lower back panel, and the side air vents on the front apron. In stylistic sync with these components is the Carbon matte trim on the center console and the interior door panels.</p>
<p>They are harmoniously augmented by the Tobago Brown nappa leather upholstery on the electronically adjustable AMG sports seats, which feature multicontour and memory functions, heating, an AMG-specific perforation pattern, a special design, and AMG badges. The vehicle’s limited edition status is discreetly emphasized by black AMG floormats with Tobago Brown leather piping, AMG door sills with white illuminated AMGlettering, and the IWC logo on the lid of the center console.</p>
<p>To ensure that the driver remains in perfect control of his or her vehicle, the two-tone AMGPerformance steering wheel has a reduced diameter, a rim that’s flattened at the bottom, and silver-finish aluminum gearshift paddles. The steering wheel is part of the Performance package, which also includes forged 19-inch AMG light alloy, double-spoke wheels with a titanium gray finish and polished surfaces. The 8.5-inch and 9.5-inch rims sport 255/35 R 19 and 285/30 R 19 format tires, respectively.</p>
<p>The front axle is equipped with internally ventilated, perforated composite disc brakes (390 x 36 mm) that keep braking distances to a minimum and ensure the vehicle is extremely resistant to fading. Handling is further enhanced by other technical features from the Performance package, including a rear-axle, multi-disc limited-slip differential with a lock factor of 40 percent, as well as an AMG Performance chassis equipped with Active Body Control.</p>
<p><strong>AMG naturally aspirated V8 with 6.3 liters displacement and 386 kW/525 hp</strong></p>
<p>The drive system of the SL 63 AMG Edition IWC will provide motorists with an exhilarating driving experience. Boasting a top output of 386 kW/525 hp and a maximum torque of 630 Nm, the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine is augmented by an extremely responsive partner in the shape of the all-new AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed sports transmission. The SL 63 AMG Edition IWC accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 300 km/h.</p>
<p><strong>Mercedes-AMG and IWC Schaffhausen: A luxurious partnership</strong></p>
<p>Along with the vehicle, buyers of the SL 63 AMG Edition IWC will also receive a limited edition model of IWC’s “Grosser Ingenieur” watch. This precious chronometer has a stainless steel housing measuring an impressive 45.5 millimeters in diameter. The design of the watch’s wristband and face compliment the vehicle concept. In addition, the watch’s bottom is made of sapphire glass that reveals the intricate mechanical clockwork with its automatic Pellaton winding system.</p>
<p>Mercedes-AMG has been collaborating with the time-honored Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen since 2004. In October of that year, the two companies presented their first jointly designed vehicle, the CLS 55 AMG “IWC Engineer.”</p>
<p>Customers will be able to order the SL 63 AMG Edition IWC beginning in fall 2008 , and vehicle deliveries will commence in November 2008. The model will be limited to 200 units.</p>

<p>The all-new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class can now be treated the Carlsson way. The new tuning kit from the Mercedes tuner promises neat transformation in the visual and energy departments. The SL 500 after all that, will evolve into the Carlsson CK50, after losing the 3 pointed star on its grille.</p>
<p>The stock 5.5 liter C8 is fiddled to produce 435-hp and a peak torque of 443 lb-ft. That allows the Carlsson CK50 to gallop from zero to 62mph in a mere 5.1 seconds with a top whack of 182mph. As for the SL 65 AMG, or CK65 as Carlsson likes to refer to it, 700+hp and 811 lb-ft of torque is what you will end up with. Thats more than any Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini. </p>
<p>All this power has to be put neatly on the road without any twitching or inconvenience. In order to achieve that, an electronic C-Tronic® SUSPENSION lowering gear for the SL, which gets the car to sit approximately 30 mm lower to the ground, is offered by the tuner so that body roll is kept at bay and it handles like a Smart Fortwo.</p>
<p>A length-adjustable front spoiler lip, grille inserts made of electropolished stainless steel for the air inlets, gill vents with carbon supports, a new rear apron and a new rear spoiler are in the appearance list to attract second glances. Quite a stunning package. </p>

<p>For the newly-arrived, comprehensively reworked Mercedes SL, Carlsson Autotechnik GmbH in Merzig can already offer an individualisation programme – transforming the SL 500 into the Carlsson CK50.</p>
<p>Coming on strong: the Carlsson CK50 engine kit</p>
<p>Specially developed by Carlsson for the current 5.5 Litre V8, the CK50 engine kit, which includes the adaptation of the electronic control unit, allows the elegant roadster to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. Following their boost by Carlsson, the output and torque data are quite impressive: 435 HP/ 320 kW (standard model: 388 HP/ 285 kW) at 6000 rpm. The torque of the tuned V8 is 600 Nm/ 2800-4800 rpm (electronically regulated), the top speed is 293 km/h thanks to the Vmax delimiter, with acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. In short, the CK50 engine kit has more than enough output and torque for any situation! Support for its output comes in the form of the CK50 kit’s exhaust gas system, which has been individually adapted to optimise the flow of exhaust gases. The exhaust gas back pressure is reduced with the help of sports middle and rear exhaust silencers made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and developed by Carlsson’s own engineers. Four polished exhaust tailpipes bear witness to the additional performance of this SL.</p>
<p>Naturally, Carlsson can also provide the appropriate performance enhancements for versions of the SL with other engines in them – extending right up to the CK65, which has over 700 HP and a torque of 1100 Nm. In all these performance enhancements, the Carlsson engineers are constantly on the lookout to ensure that the tolerance limits of the engine components are not exceeded, so as to avoid any damage. Equally, all engines that have been tuned by Carlsson still comply with all the regulations concerning exhaust fumes.</p>
<p>Aerodynamics, Carlsson style: first-rate appearance meets sporty presentation</p>
<p>Good aerodynamics in a car will have a positive effect on its driving and safety. Discreet but highly-efficient Carlsson components round off the appearance of this SL, cleverly adding a sporting touch. For vehicles with an AMG styling package, Carlsson is offering a length-adjustable front spoiler lip, made of PUR in original equipment manufacturer quality or of carbon, which is used as a material in motor sports. Further visual highlights are provided by the grille inserts made of electropolished stainless steel for the air inlets, and by the air outlet gill vents with carbon supports. Also for vehicles with AMG styling, Carlsson builds into the rear apron a diffusor insert made of PUR, with an air conduction system made of carbon. For the standard rear apron with AMG styling, Carlsson offers grille inserts made of electropolished stainless steel. A spoiler at the rear creates greater downward impetus, thus ensuring greater stability at high speeds.</p>
<p>The electronic C-Tronic® SUSPENSION lowering gear</p>
<p>Carlsson also provides electronic C-Tronic® SUSPENSION lowering gear for the SL, which lowers the vehicle approximately 30 mm further – thus giving the roadster a visibly sportier appearance and ensuring a lower centre of gravity.</p>
<p>This C-Tronic® SUSPENSION reacts intelligently to the actual road conditions. On a poor stretch of road, or in the event of persistently heavy compression, the height of the vehicle is automatically readjusted to ensure that the necessary reserve of spring travel required for preserving driving comfort is maintained. Even at speeds in excess of 120 km/h, the suspension travel remains sufficient at all times because the C-Tronic® SUSPENSION respects the maximum depth permissible for the standard model – in other words, the minimum vehicle level.</p>
<p>Reduced body roll and a much greater agility in handling lead in turn to a significant increase in driving pleasure. At the same time, with less air flowing beneath the vehicle, there is a reduction in aerodynamic drag and lift.</p>
<p>The 1/16 Ultra Light high tech forged wheel</p>
<p>The surface of the 1/16 Ultra Light multi-spoke wheel is polished to a high-gloss finish and coated with highly-transparent protective lacquer. The sides of the spokes are brush-finished and create an elegant contrast to the surface.</p>
<p>Multi-spoke designs are ideal for the optimisation of weight. The even distribution of the spokes means that forces acting upon the wheel are directed into the wheel spider as efficiently as possible. Thus an oversized thickness is avoided and the ideal wheel weight achieved. Stat-of-the-art forging technology ensures a saving in weight of approximately 38% as opposed to cast wheels of comparable wheel load and dimensions. Due to the denseness of the metal, discharged forces are transmitted onward more evenly than in a cast wheel. The unsprung masses at the wheel suspensions are kept as low as possible, and as a result the wheels tramp less. This is why Carlsson’s forged wheels guarantee a noticeable improvement in driving comfort over conventional light metal wheels, and this can be felt particularly clearly on an uneven road surface.</p>
<p>Carlsson’s forged Carlsson 1/16 Ultra Light wheel is available for the SL in the following sizes: 8.5 x 19”, 8.5 x 20” and 9.5 x 20” (VA+HA) and 10 x 19” and 11 x 20” (HA only). A typical 20“ combination would consist of 9.5 x 20“ at the front and 11 x 20” at the rear, with 255/30 and 305/25 tyres respectively.<br />
A chic interior ambience</p>
<p>Available in the colour of your choice, elegant car mats made of soft velour add considerably to the appeal of the cockpit of the SL. The extension of the speedometer to go up to 360 km/h demonstrates that there is far greater potential slumbering under the bonnet than you’ll find in the regular model.  Naturally, Carlsson can modify the vehicle’s interior to suit individual wishes. And with fine leather fittings, multimedia components and much more available, there are barely any limits to the remodeling possibilities.
